Cookie Policy
Last updated: 2 June 2026
This policy explains the cookies and similar technologies we use on SYE Code, and how you can control them. It sits alongside our Privacy Policy.
Essential vs non-essential
We split cookies into two groups:
- Essential cookies are needed to make the site work (for example, to keep you logged in). These do not require consent and are always set.
- Non-essential cookies — such as analytics — are only set after you accept them via our cookie banner. Until you opt in, they don't run.
Essential cookies
| Cookie | Purpose | Consent |
|---|---|---|
sye_session | Keeps you securely logged in (authentication/session). The site can't work for signed-in users without it. | Not required (essential) |
Non-essential cookies (consent required)
These are set only after you accept in the cookie banner. They help us understand how the site is used so we can improve it.
| Cookie / tool | Provider | Purpose |
|---|---|---|
_ga and related | Google Analytics | Measures usage and traffic (anonymous, aggregate analytics). |
| PostHog cookies | PostHog | Product analytics and feature flags (which features are used, A/B experiments). |
We avoid analytics/profiling of logged-in student accounts. See the Privacy Policy for who these providers are and where data may be transferred.
Browser storage for preferences (not a tracking cookie)
We also use your browser's localStorage to remember functional preferences on your own device. This isn't a tracking cookie — it stays in your browser and isn't used to profile you. Examples include:
sye-theme— your light/dark theme choicesye-editor-zoom— your code-editor zoom levelsyeTeachClassView— your class-view layout preferencesye_last_join_code— the last class join code you used, to save re-typing it
Managing your choices
- You can change your choice at any time using the "Cookie settings" link (in the footer), which reopens the consent banner so you can accept or reject non-essential cookies.
- You can also block or delete cookies through your browser settings. Note that blocking the essential
sye_sessioncookie will stop you from staying logged in.
Changes to this policy
We may update this policy if our use of cookies changes. We'll update the "Last updated" date above when we do.
